Alan Scott Phillips, a beloved husband, mentor, and racing enthusiast passed away at his residence on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at the age of 59. Scott was born on June 3, 1966 to the late Melvin Phillips and the late Ruth Martin Puryear and is survived by his wife, Kathy Perkins Phillips.
Throughout his career, Scott excelled as a foreman at Burlington Industries in Maintenance, and made significant contributions to Mid-Atlantic Test & Balance (HVAC). His supervisory role at UNC Chapel Hill's Maintenance department was marked by his commitment to excellence and his ability to inspire those around him.
Scott was a true racing fanatic, building and racing cars with a passion that knew no bounds. He was the 2022 Pure Stock Champion at South Boston Speedway and 2023 Pure Stock Champion at Orange County Speedway, achievements that stood as testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. Beyond his personal successes, Scott generously mentored many aspiring racers, imparting his knowledge and fostering a new generation of enthusiasts.
A tender-hearted soul, Scott had a particular fondness for animals, extending his kindness and care to all creatures great and small. His gentle spirit and genuine affection for animals were defining aspects of his character.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Alan Chase Phillips of Timberlake, NC; daughter, Holly Covington (Luke) of Crystal Hill; grandchildren, Quinn Covington, Colter Covington and Landon Fears; and sisters, Wanda Gail Rowan of Virgilina and Susan Carol Daniel (Ken) of Sutherlin.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025 from 4 PM until 6 PM at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Scott's family asks that donations be made to God's Pit Crew in his memory.
Arrangements for Alan have been entrusted to Brooks Lyon Funeral Home, 115 Main Street, South Boston, Virginia.
