Mr. Albert Joseph Gillis, 86, husband of the late Charmaine Margaruite Ghelfi Gillis, died Saturday June 28, 2014 in Norfolk at his daughter's residence. Albert was native to Indiana and retired from the U.S. Navy. He was an original Navy Frogman, serving in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After retirement from service, he worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections and following retirement from there moved from Norfolk to South Boston. An avid animal lover, he often was known to rescue homeless animals. Albert was a member of Saint Paschal Catholic Church where he was active as a Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 8 and V.F.W. Post 8243. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday July 5, 2014 at Saint Paschal Catholic Church at 11 AM by Father Gerry Kaggwa. Veteran Rites will be held on Monday, July 7 at 12 noon in the Virginia Veteran's Cemetery in Amelia. Surviving are his daughters, Terri Ann Gillis of New York, Cheryl Ann Gillis Pauley and husband, Ron of Norfolk; a son, David Allen Gillis of Norfolk; a sister, Adele Weldon of Ft. Wayne, IN; grandchildren, Jamie Leigh Hughes and Jordan Alexandra Haley; and great grandchildren, Landon and Brooke Hughes. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 PM until 9 PM at the Brooks Lyon Funeral Home in South Boston.
