Andrew Jackson "Jack" Carter, Sr. of Alton, Virginia passed away on June 9 th 2026. He was born on June 10, 1935 in Alton, Virginia. He was the son of the late Charlie Eddie Carter and the late Lillian Edwards Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Branscome Carter of 68 years. He is survived by his children, Robin Reeves (Mike), Andy Carter (Margaret), Kay Newcomb (W.T.), Mark Carter (Teresa) and Patrick Carter. One son precedes him in death, David Brian Carter. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren ( Adam, Lori, Shane, Jay, Katie, Nicholas and Grace) and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Carter and Jimmy Carter of Danville, and two sisters, Hilda Nostrandt of Richmond, and Mary Ellen Goss of Niceville, Florida. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Calvert, Mildred Wilson and Jane Saunders and two brothers, Aubrey Carter and Charlies Carter.

Jack attended school at Turbeville School. He quit school at age 17 and joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1952 to 1956. He came back home and graduated from Halifax County High School. He worked at Pittsylvania Hardware in Danville for ten years, and then went to work at Westinghouse, later known as ABB, in Halifax County for 28 years until retirement.

He especially enjoyed participating and watching all kinds of sports. He played baseball, bowled and loved participating in horseshoe tournaments. He was an avid beekeeper, gardener and hunter. He was a gifted furniture maker and enjoyed making things for his children and neighbors.

He was a lifelong member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church where he faithfully served as treasurer for many years. He loved his church and his church family. He was a member of the Turbeville Ruritan Club for many years where he served as treasurer.

A visitation will be held from 1 pm to 2 pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026 , at Olive Branch United Methodist Church. A celebration of life will follow at Olive Branch at 2:00 pm with Pastor Jennifer Greer officiating.
