Augustus Lafayette Vernon

November 19, 1925 — December 7, 2013

Mr. Augustus LaFayette "Gus" Vernon, Jr. of 3174 East Hyco Road, South Boston, VA died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at his home. Born in Halifax County on November 19, 1925, he was the son of the late Augustus L. Vernon, Sr. and the late Maude E. Osborne Vernon, was married to the late Margie C. Vernon, and is survived by his second wife, Helen P. Vernon. Gus was a retired maintenance electrician for Wabash Magnetics, and was previously employed by Royster Electric and Burlington Industries. His memberships included McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church, Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge # 91 (South Boston), VFW Post 8243 (Halifax), American Legion Post 8 (South Boston), AARP Chapter 4327 and Woodmen of the World Lodge 106 (South Boston). He was also a veteran of WWII serving in the U. S. Navy. In addition to his wife, Helen P. Vernon, he is survived by a daughter, Gale V. Meadows of South Boston, VA; a son, Gary M. Vernon and wife Peggy of Clarksville, VA; sister, Ruth V. Solgas of Folsom, CA; two grandsons, Terry Meadows, Jr. and wife Shannon and Todd Meadows and wife Liz; three great grandchildren, Bryce Meadows, Riley Meadows, and Piper Meadows, and by one step grandson, Chandler Hart. Mr. Vernon was also preceded in death by his sisters, Louise V. Harris, Sue V. Loftis, Frances V. Lowery and his brothers, James Vernon and Irvin Vernon Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013, at 2 PM in Brooks Funeral Home Chapel where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to services from 1 until 2 o'clock. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
