Bettie Blackmon Townsend, of Virgilina, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the age of 77. She was born in Danville, VA on November 16, 1948 to Howard and Margaret Blackmon.
She was a graduate of Halifax County Senior High. Throughout her life, she embodied a spirit of service and compassion, which she carried into her profession. Bettie spent 17 years welcoming visitors with a smile as a Greeter at Walmart, a role that brought her immense joy. Additionally, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at multiple caregiving facilities, providing comfort and care to countless individuals and their families. Bettie had a deep passion for her family and cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. She took great pride in her role as a mother and found happiness in flowers, capturing memories through photography, and taking leisurely Sunday drives through the picturesque Virginia countryside.
Bettie is survived by her devoted daughter-in-law, Jessica Harville, of Scottsburg, VA.; granddaughter, Ellen Crowder Slagle (Morgon); sons, Douglas Scott Crowder and Jason Crowder (Donna); great granddaughter, Ada Rae Slagle; grandson, Chase Crowder; brother, Howard Lewis; sister, Phyllis Matthews and long lifetime best friend, Patricia Nichols.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Howard & Margaret Blackmon; her special friend, Hester Townsend; son, Addison Steven Harville; and brother-in-law, James Matthews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jack Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Jessica Harville.
