Dallas L. Gregory, known to family and friends simply as "Sambo," passed away on April 7th, 2026 at the age of 87 at Chase City Rehab Nursing Home in Chase City, Virginia. Dallas was born on January 19th, 1939 to the late James Robert Gregory Sr. and Lois Johnson Gregory. He was a devoted husband, father, and longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church who lived a long, full life and left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
During his working years, Dallas was a dedicated employee of Burlington Industries and later served the community as dog warden for Mecklenburg County. He was a man who showed up and did what needed to be done — at work, at home, and for the people around him.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Dallas's faith was a steady anchor throughout his life.
In his retirement, you'd most likely find him outdoors — hunting, fishing, or tending to his garden. He never missed a chance to put in his picks for the weekly NASCAR pool. That's where he was happiest, and anyone around him could see it. Dallas had a natural gift for conversation — he could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, and before long he'd know their whole life story. That was just Sambo.
Dallas is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Gregory; his son Brad Gregory and wife Debbie; his grandchildren Ryan (Karoline), Katelyn (Rowdy), Daniel (Danielle), and Anna (Garrett), along with several great-grandchildren; his nephew and longtime fishing companion, Jim Gregory; and several nieces.
He was preceded in death by his son Kevin Gregory; his parents, James and Lois Gregory; and his brothers, Burlin Gregory and Robert Gregory.
He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service to celebrate Sambo's life will be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Skipwith, VA on April 24th at 11:00 am with a reception to follow in Campbell Hall.
The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to New Hope Baptist Church - Cemetery and or Scholarship Fund in Sambo's name.
Services have been respectfully provided by Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville, Virginia.
