Donald Leon Hite Sr. passed away on September 17, 2026. Born March 17, 1943, Leon spent his life in the hills of Buffalo Junction, VA. He was a devoted family man, proud beyond measure of his children but lovingly devoted to Merry Lou, his wife of 60 years. Together, they shared a lifetime of memories.
Leon was a graduate of Bluestone Senior High School. He proudly served in the United States National Guard from 1966-1970. At the age of 16, he began to work for A.W Talbott at TALBOTT MARKS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY and would continue working as a foreman many years to come.
Upon completion of his time with Talbott Marks, Leon would join his brothers Linwood and Dale Hite for HITE’S DEPARTMENT STORE, managing stores in Brookneal, VA and Henderson, NC.
Leon enjoyed his many trips to Pompano Beach Florida in his earlier years and later, to Smithfield VA to see his grandson, Beau and daughter Dianne (Maynard). A coast lover, he and Merry Lou often enjoyed the shores of Hilton Head Island, where his son, Don, continues to reside.
Leon was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and cousin, remembered fondly by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Merry Lou Hite; his children, Don Hite and Dianne Hite Gwaltney (Maynard); one grandson, Beau Gwaltney his brother, Dale Hite (Joan); and his sister, Gwennie Hite Talley. He also leaves behind his nephews, Lin Hite (Carla), Jeff Jones (Carol Ann), Todd Jones (Tonya), and Lane Hite (Anna); Nieces, Gwyn Hite Bell (Jeff) and Brittany Hite Manda (Victor) along with many Hite cousins.
Leon will be laid to rest with a funeral service at Gravel Hill Baptist Church on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with interment on the church grounds to follow. The service will be officiated by Larry “Rat” Davis, with longtime friend Pat Newton serving as guest soloist. Leon’s son, Don Hite, will be the piano soloist for the funeral service.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends and family members who blessed Merry Lou with wonderful visits, calls, and messages.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.brookslyon.com/obituaries. Watkins Cooper Lyon funeral home is honored to care for the Hite family during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Clarksville Fire and Rescue Squad.
