Evelyn Mae Dawson Conner, age 92, went to Glory and met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 1, 2026. Born on November 2, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was the oldest child of Letcher T. Dawson and Jessie Mae White Dawson.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Allen "Wayne" Conner and her brothers, Hampton O. Dawson, Sr. and Claude Lee Dawson.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Gail Adcock Bishop and husband, Larry Dean Bishop of South Boston; her step-daughter, Sherri Bee of South Boston; her sisters-in-law, Evelyn B. Dawson of Cody and Vicki N. Dawson of Lewiston, PA; six nieces, two nephews and their families.
Evelyn was a long-time member of Bible Baptist Church in Cluster Springs. She loved her church and church family dearly and faithfully attended as long as she was able.
She worked at J.P. Stevens in the weave room as a smash hand with over 40 years' service at her retirement. Many lifelong friendships were developed at "the mill" and she cherished them all, especially her running mates and special friends Nannie Sue Chappell and Bunny Saunders.
Evelyn was a wonderful cook and champion biscuit maker. She loved being in the kitchen preparing meals, and she and Wayne enjoyed hosting an annual pig-pickin and stew for family and friends. Evelyn was a master quiltmaker, lovingly sewing and hand quilting numerous works of art over the years. She enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her brother, Hampton, in Maine, Nebraska and Florida.
The family would like to thank her long-term caregivers, Deborah Wright (B.J.) and Donna Lawson and her recent carers, Kim Dyer, Sheila Francis and Cindy Collins. They all provided faithful, loving and devoted service to Evelyn and the family. She enjoyed their love and companionship and the happy times shared shopping, eating out and attending celebrations of all kinds.
Evelyn will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her daughter, Barbara, and her sister-in-law, Brenda Conner, with whom she shared a special bond of love, family and friendship.
A service celebrating Evelyn's life will be conducted at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home in South Boston on Wednesday, November 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM by her pastor, Pastor Chris McGee and Rev. Randy Foster. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Scottsburg where Evelyn will be laid to rest beside her devoted, loving husband and beloved mother.
