Clarksville, VA – Floyd William Kirby, 98, died December 19, 2018 after a long period of declining health.Born on April 13, 1920 to the late Charles F. and Effie Byars Kirby in Rhodhiss, North Carolina, he was also preceded in death by his sisters Naomi and Noreen and brothers Boyd, Dwight, Vance, Glenn and Dean.He is survived by brothers Dan and Joe and sister Juanita.He is also survived by his beloved wife of 78 years, Jewel Triplett Kirby, of South Boston, a son, Floyd William Kirby, Jr. (“Butch”), his wife Margi, and two grandsons, Preston R. Kirby and Warren B. Kirby, MD, all of Richmond.For some 50 years he worked in various capacities for Burlington Industries and its predecessor, Pacific Mills.After retiring from the textile industry in 1990, Floyd began a second career in real estate, and it was believed that at the time he finally retired in 2014 at the age of 94, he was one of the oldest active Real Estate Brokers in the United States, if not the oldest.Floyd was an avid sailor and founding member of the Kerr Lake Yacht Club.He was a veteran of the Army Air Force during World War II, who flew 35 combat missions as a B-17 bombardier in the European Theater and was decorated with the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.The family will receive friends at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, 703 Virginia Ave., Clarksville, VA 23927 at 12:30 PM on Friday, December 21, 2018 followed by a 2:00 p.m. graveside service in Oakhurst Cemetery.The Reverend Dr. Greg Randall will officiate the service.
