Garnett Garland Newton, 86, widow of Lizzie Parker Newton, died Saturday, August 28, 2004 in South Boston, VA. Born and reared in Mecklenburg County to Samuel Morgan and Rosa Emma Puryear Newton on January 22, 1918, Garnett was a member of Averett Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board and as Chairman. He was a retired farmer and retired from Burlington Industries. Pre-deceased by daughter Emma Gray Overbey, Mr. Newton is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Betty N. and Charles Bass, and Peggy N. and John Currin; son-in-law and his wife, Ryland and Wilma Overbey, all of Buffalo Junction. Granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Gale and John Pittard and Jennifer and Wayne Pennington; and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb, and Zachery Pittard and Kelsey Pennington also survive Mr. Newton. Funeral services will be 2 PM Tuesday at Nelson Baptist Church with the Reverends Jim McAlister, Rodney Barwick, and Horace Murray officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 PM Monday at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home.
