George Washington Bliss passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, just shy of his 94th birthday. Born on February 22, 1932 in Clover, VA to the late Tom Bliss and the late Sula Hughes Bliss, George lived a life full of love and dedication before leaving this world to reunite with his beloved wife, Elsie Smith Bliss.
He had an unwavering love for the great outdoors, spending many cherished days fishing in serene waters, hunting quail in the early morning mist, and tending to his flourishing garden. Known for his green thumb, George took immense pride in nurturing life from soil to sky and selling his famous tomatoes. His love of boxing echoed his revered work ethic, embodying strength, discipline, and precision in everything he pursued. Whether cutting wood on a brisk afternoon or mowing grass under the summer sun, George found joy in hard work, believing it to be both a duty and a privilege. He also loved strumming on his guitar whenever he found the time.
George is survived by his son, Stan Bliss, and wife, Karen; his daughter, Janet Dunn, and husband, Danny. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Steve Bliss (Deanna) Ashley Riddle (Chip), Scott Dunn (Nichole) and Justin Dunn (Felicia), who all held a special place in his heart. His legacy also continues through his adoring 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Shirley Gregory.
In addition to his wife and parents, George was preceded in death by his siblings, Andrew, Frank, Tasker, Thelma, Irene, and Nannie.
Funeral services for George will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Raymond Wooten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the service, starting at 1:00 PM at the church and following the service at his home until 6:00 PM.
George's legacy is not just etched in the land he cared for but also in the hearts and minds of his beloved family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories of his kindness, wisdom, and humor.
