South Boston

Howard Owen Anderson Sr., 80, of South Boston, VA, passed away on July 5, 2026. Born March 24, 1946, he was the son of Howard Taft and Thelma Jeanette Owen Anderson. Along with his parents, “Howard Owen”, as he was oftentimes referred to, was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 44 years, Nancy Nicholas Anderson, and a sister, Mary A. Lee Synan.

Howard served his country with honor as a member of the US Army Reserves, and his community, through 30 years of public service with the City of Lynchburg, VDOT, and ending with the Town of South Boston. He loved the Lord and enjoyed his work with an area Food Bank. He had a love for horses, was an avid outdoorsman, set records in shooting sports, and a collector of many things, including guns, knives and his prized arrowheads. Howard may be best known for his passion for dogs, and in the most recent years, his award winning beagles. When at home, he was never without a dog in his lap. Howard's life was a testament to his love for his family, his loyalty to his friends, his dedication to his work, and his passion for his hobbies. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Berri Anderson Rice, of Forest, VA, his son, Howard O. "Andy" Anderson Jr., of Arizona, five grandchildren, a great-granddaughter who always made him smile, and another precious baby on the way. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Betsy A. Smith, of Roanoke, VA and Gayle A. Saunders, of Pennsylvania.
