James Harry Morgan

James Harry Morgan passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Calyx Living in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, surrounded by his family. Born in Philadelphia, PA on February 23, 1930, he was the son of Maurice Joseph Morgan and Margaret Hill Morgan.

Jim was a devoted husband to Midge, his wife of sixty-seven years, and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.


He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in classics, and subsequently with a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia. He taught Latin and US Government and worked as a guidance counselor at Madison High School (Vienna, Virginia; 1960–68), W. T. Woodson High School (Fairfax, Virginia; 1968–85) and Randolph Henry High School (Charlotte Court House, Virginia; 1986–92).

In addition to his service in education, Jim will be remembered for his faithful participation in and service to various organizations and communities, including the US Army, 2nd Armored Calvary in Nurenberg, Germany (1951-1953), the Church of the Good Shepherd in Burke, Clarksville Presbyterian Church, the Kinderton Country Club and the Merrifield Landowners Association. He was also a devoted Washington Commanders and UNC basketball fan.


Jim is survived by his wife, Margaret ('Midge') Thomas Morgan and by his daughter, Melissa Diane Dayton; his son, James Maurice Morgan; his grandchildren, Chris and Garrett Dayton, and Daniel Morgan, Melinda Morgan, and Christina Mubarik-Morgan, and grandchild Orell Morgan.

He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Maurice Morgan.

Due to family circumstances, a quiet intimate memorial service for Jim will be held for family and friends from the Calyx Living community of Fuquay-Varina, with Rev. Dr. James Maurice Morgan officiating.


The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (https://themmrf.org) or to support the training of ministers at the “Niger School of Theology – ESPriT” through SIM (see https://www.simusa.org/give/).
