Jesse Willard Barksdale

Mr. Jesse Willard Barksdale, Sr. passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at his home located on Sandy Beach Road, South Boston, at the age of 89.He was married to the late Mildred Jones Barksdale for 67 years. Mr. Barksdale was born in Halifax County on December 29, 1927, a son of the late Henry Barksdale and the late Martha Moore Barksdale.Self-employed as a farmer, welder and carpenter, Mr. Barksdale had a tremendous work ethic.In the community, he served as a lifetime member of the Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department and attended First Cross Roads Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Brenda B. Yancey and husband Larry of South Boston; and a son, Jesse W. Barksdale, Jr. and wife Veronna of Alton.Other survivors include grandchildren, Lydia Y. Vernon and husband Scott of Burlington, NC; Michael Snead and wife Sheila; great grandsons, Seth and Ethan Vernon; Blake and Hayden Snead; step granddaughter, Brianna Rauser-Chisholm.Also surviving are two brothers, Roy Lee Barksdale of Orange, and Owen M. Barksdale and wife Nell of Alton. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Winston Barksdale and William Barksdale. The family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful and thoughtful care from Sheila Brooks, Alisa Crawley and Jennifer Barksdale. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 30 at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home from 2:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the service. Funeral services for Mr. Barksdale will be Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Brooks Lyon Betty B. Jones Chapel with Reverend Dan Ward officiating.Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
