Joan T. Mallonee passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Commonwealth Senior Living in South Boston, Virginia. Born on August 23, 1939, in Franklin, North Carolina, she was the daughter of John Harry Thomas and Genette Mallonee Thomas.
She was a devoted wife to William, her husband of fifty-two years, and a loving aunt to her nieces, nephews, and their children.
After graduating from Franklin High School in 1957, Joan went on to study at the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. She then studied at Drew University, obtaining a Master of Divinity, and at Rutgers, obtaining a Master of Social Work in 1978. Thanks to William’s successful academic career, the couple worked and studied at various colleges: Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ); The Garrett Theological Seminary (Evanston, IL); Douglass College for Women at Rutgers; The University of Massachusetts, and Hampshire College (Amherst, MA). The year of 1980 marked Joan’s move back to the south, when William accepted a position at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. During that time, while William was busy at the university, Joan demonstrated her passion and academic excellence, by earning a Ph.D. at the University of Alabama and developing her private psychotherapy practice as a licensed clinical social worker. Joan was also awarded membership by the American Psychotherapy Association in 1998.
Until William’s passing in January 2017, they enjoyed most of their fifty-two years of marriage at their lovely home in the wooded neighborhood on Springhill Drive in Tuscaloosa. During those productive years, William and Joan never lost sight and support of individuals, groups, and social issues that they deeply cared about such as civil rights, the rights of women and minority groups. For example, they generously supported various local and national Native American and African American charities.
Joan and William absolutely loved the grand displays of nature around their home and in the Tuscaloosa region. They were also passionately devoted to their many cats. The last one, “Maya”, was Joan’s faithful companion all the way to South Boston, Virginia. A few years ago, Maya happily found a loving home with a local family.
Despite finishing her earthly journey in an unfamiliar place, Joan never lost her inquisitive nature or playfulness. She was passionate and energetic, always upbeat and rarely complaining. She was also intensely interested in what her family was doing. We are thankful for the care she received at Commonwealth Senior Living, as well as for the tireless care offered by her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Jim Morgan. They took care of Joan as best they could until they faced their own health challenges. Finally, we are thankful for the care Joan received by their children, Melissa and Maurice.
Joan is survived by her sister, Margaret Thomas Morgan; and her nephews and nieces and their spouses, Roger Chandler (Frances Chandler), Charles Chandler, Melanie Thomas Aufenanger (Andreas Aufenanger), Melissa Morgan Dayton (Kevin Wright), John Thomas (Amanda Minger), and James “Maurice” Morgan (Lilian Morgan); and their respective children, who also cherished Aunt Joan.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband William Guy Doty; her sister, Frances Carolyn Thomas Chandler; her brothers John Charles “Charlie” Thomas and Jimmie Thomas; and her parents John Harry Thomas and Genette Mallonee Thomas.
Due to health challenges within our family, a memorial service was held at the home of Joan’s niece, Melissa Dayton, in Cary, North Carolina on Sunday, April 12. The service was officiated by her nephew, Rev. Dr. James “Maurice” Morgan, and included inspirational and heartfelt tributes to Aunt Joan.
In memory of our beloved aunt, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following charities in lieu of flowers: UNCF (https://uncf.org/ways-to-donate) or the American Indian College Fund (https://engage.collegefund.org/page/77467/donate/1).
