John Atkerson Burgess

Alton, Virginia John Atkerson Burgess, 92, husband of Myrtis Brandon Burgess, died Friday Nov. 8, 2013 at his residence. John was the son of the late Samuel Hales and Nannie Henderson Burgess and was the last surviving child of 12. After serving in the US Navy during WWII, he retired from Virginia Power after 34 years Service. He and Myrtis were married for 66 years. Mr. Burgess was a lifelong member of American Legion Post 8 of South Boston and of Alton Baptist Church. A Memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 PM in the Alton Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Vance Midgett. Burial will be private. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter Janet B. Vaughan and her husband Ronnie of Alton, Grandchildren Adrienne Burgess Snead and husband Tim of Scottsburg, Heather Ann Reed of Alton and Jeremy Lee Vaughan of South Boston. He was predeceased by a son Jerry Allen Burgess, 7 sisters and 4 brothers. Visitation will be held immediately following the memorial service and the family request everyone attending to come casual. Contributions may be made to the Halifax Regional Hospice 2204 Wilborn Road, South Boston or the Women Missionary Union at Alton Baptist Church, Alton, Va 24520 The family are being cared for by the Cremation Society of Virginia, Clarksville.
