It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leland Tyree Gwaltney, a beloved resident of South Hill, Virginia, who was called to his eternal rest on Saturday, November 22nd, 2025. Leland was born on Monday, August 15th, 1960, and lived a life full of purpose, dedication, and love for family, friends, and community.
Leland was a true son of South Hill, with deep roots in his hometown. Residing at 1134 Twin Cedar Road, his legacy is woven into the very fabric of the community he served.
A man of many talents, Leland earned an Associate's degree in Electrical studies from Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) and used his skills as a self-employed electrician. His exceptional work ethic extended to the fields, as both a tobacco and grain farmer, and a devoted cattle farmer.
He was a lifetime member and former president of the Meherrin River Hunt Club, where he fostered camaraderie and shared his love of the outdoors. His dedication earned him a lifetime achievement award, a testament to his enduring impact and leadership.
Above all, Leland was a family man. He cherished his family, gloried in the company of his grandchildren, and always stood ready to lend a hand to those in need, embodying the spirit of generosity and kindness.
Leland's memory lives on through his surviving family: his loving wife of 44 years, Julia; sons Jason Tyree Gwaltney (Heather) of South Hill, VA, Daniel Lee Gwaltney of South Hill, VA, and Davis Cumbia (Kristen) of South Hill, VA; his devoted sister Betty Ann Deornellas (Stephen) also of South Hill, VA; and his precious grandchildren, Macon, Aiden, Westin, Lula Fay, Wyatt, Ashton, and Brynlee. He will also be remembered fondly by his nephews Christopher and Kevin.
To honor and celebrate Leland's life, services will be held at the Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will follow on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with burial to take place at the Gwaltney Family Cemetery.
Leland's family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association or The Doorways, continuing his legacy of care and support for others.
