Mario Carlo Scappino Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, at the age of 85 in Clarksville, VA. Born on November 30th, 1940, Mario lived a life filled with love, dedication, and passion.
Mario proudly served his country as a Navy Operations Intelligence Specialist, a role that suited his keen intellect and attention to detail. His love for the sea and the discipline he learned in the Navy shaped much of his life.
He was a passionate enthusiast of classic cars, especially his cherished 1964 Falcon. Many weekends were spent with his brother, Frank Scappino, attending car shows and sharing stories of their adventures. A true Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Mario’s loyalty to his team was unwavering, just like his love for westerns and Clint Eastwood movies.
In 2005, Mario moved to the picturesque town of Clarksville, VA. There, he embraced his love of the water, often found boating and tubing on the lake, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of nature.
Mario's greatest love was for his late wife, Carole Jean Scappino, whose memory he cherished deeply. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted father to his three sons, Mario Carlo "Utchie " Scappino Jr. (Siobhan) of Raleigh, NC, Michael Stephen Scappino and Christopher John Scappino (Samantha), both of NJ. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Patrick and Elizabeth Scappino of Raleigh, NC.
Mario is also survived by his loving siblings, Mary Delesky and Aldo Scappino, who shared in countless adventures and family gatherings.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carole Jean Scappino, his daughter, Lori Ann Scappino, his parents, Carlo and Anne Scappino, and two brothers and two sisters who are missed dearly.
A funeral service to honor his memory will be held at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, on Saturday, May 30th, at 2:00 pm. Family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm. Burial will directly follow the funeral service at Oakhurst Cemetery.
Mario will be remembered for his love of family, his service to his country, and his unyielding zest for life. He will be deeply missed, yet his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
