Marlene Yancey Harris, a cherished lifelong resident of Clarksville, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 29, 2026, at the age of 93. Known for her warm heart and generous spirit, Marlene was surrounded by her loving family during her final moments.
Born on August 1st, 1932, to Jordan and Lillian Yancey, Marlene grew up in a loving family alongside her three brothers, Lester, Chester, and Emron Yancey, all of whom preceded her in death. After graduating from Clarksville High School in 1949, Marlene worked as a Lab Technician and Process Controller with Burlington Industries, where she dedicated 39 years of diligent service.
Marlene was married to the love of her life, William Eugene Harris, who predeceased her. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and devotion. A devoted mother, Marlene is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Powell and her husband David of Durham, NC, and Karen Walker and her husband Samuel of Buffalo Junction, VA. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Joseph Powell and his wife Britany, Matthew Powell and his wife Grace, Harrison Walker and his fiancé Ashlyn DiLoreto, and Jordan Walker. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Lilly, Sydney, Kessler, and Winston Powell, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Marlene’s love of cooking and gardening was well known among her family and friends. Her home and farm were a warm and welcoming place where everyone felt at home. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family to numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
Marlene and her husband, William, worked side by side raising tobacco, building a life rooted in dedication and hard work. She was also an active member of her community, contributing her time to the Mecklenburg County Rescue Squad and various church committees, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.
The family is grateful for her devoted caretaker, Annie Locklear, who cared for Marlene with love and compassion, as well as the other dedicated caregivers who cared for her.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Marlene’s life on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Chapel Baptist Church. A burial will follow the funeral in the church cemetery. The night before, on Friday, April 3rd, the family will receive family and friends at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Per Marlene's requests, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Marlene's home church Union Chapel Baptist Church. Marlene spent many years as an active member there and held the church so dear to her heart.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, who have provided compassionate care to the family during this time.
