Mary Ada Shotwell

Mrs. Mary Ada Murray Shotwell of Virgilina, Virginia died February 14, 2011 at Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville, Virginia surrounded by family members. She was the widow of James Buchanan "J.B." Shotwell, Sr. of Virgilina. Born on December 31, 1918 in Virgilina, Halifax County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Cabel Flournoy Murray and the late Emily Bell Tuck Murray. She was a member of Union Christian Church in Virgilina. Survivors include one son, William C. Shotwell and wife, Mary Ann of Virgilina; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Shotwell Smith and husband, Ernest Liddell Smith of Rome, GA; grandchildren, Ruth Anne Phillips Smith and husband, David, and Andrew and Patrick Smith; great-grandchildren, Keipris Lee Smith, Caleb Buchanan Smith and Elijah Vance Smith all of Rome, GA; and one brother, Fraser Murray. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Buchanan "J.B." Shotwell, Sr.; one son, James Buchanan Shotwell, Jr.; an infant daughter; sisters, her parents, Cabel F. and Emily Bell Murray; sisters, Selma Rice and Ruth Tuck; brothers, Herman Murray, Solomon Murray, and Leon (Cook) Murray. Mrs. Shotwell graduated from Virgilina High School and enjoyed many creative outlets. She will be remembered for her gentle and sweet nature and an ability to make people smile. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, VA. The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Union Christian Church in Virgilina. Burial will follow at Virgilina Cemetery. Flowers are accepted, but in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
