Mary Hicks Thompson, born on November 26, 1954, in Germany, peacefully passed away at her residence in Cluster Springs, Virginia, on October 26, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
A proud graduate of Tampa Bay High School, Mary dedicated her career to the world of design, retiring as a senior art wear designer from Russell Athletic. Her passion for creativity extended beyond her profession; she was an avid traveler with a keen eye for antiques and boutiques. Mary was also a talented dog groomer, earning the honor of being nominated six times as the Best Dog Groomer in Halifax County. Mary's love for nature was evident in her passion for flowers, but her greatest joy came from her family. She cherished her grandchildren—Logan, Hayden, Lilly, Brittany, Kristen, Miley, and Ally—and her beloved dog, Ayda. Mary was an active member of Black Walnut Baptist Church, where she found community and connection.
She is survived by her devoted spouse, Monte Blake Thompson; her daughter, Raven Long and son-in-law Joey; stepchildren, Brandon Huff, Mitzi Thompson, Monica Motley and spouse Stuart, Monte Thompson Jr. and spouse Heather; sisters, Donna Winesett and spouse Billy, Yvonne Carter and spouse Gary; her bonus mom, Nellie Ruth Hicks; cousin, Debbie Hill Windham; and three special friends, Lynn, P.J., and Sharon. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Marylina (Birdie) Hill Tallon; father, Leland Carol Hicks; and sister, Carolyn Caul.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Black Walnut Baptist Church, where family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of an extraordinary woman who touched the hearts of many.
Mary will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, creative talents, and unwavering love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and beauty that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
