May Harriett Hughes

It is with deep love and heartfelt sadness that the family of May Harriett Hughes announces her passing on February 6, 2026, at the age of 86. May was born on October 3, 1939, in Malone, NY and lived most of her life in Grant, NY before she and Dennis retired to Clarksville, Virginia in 2001.

May will be remembered for her generosity, caring ways, her amazing baking and her dedication to her family and her community. Those fortunate enough to know her will forever cherish the memories, friendships, and kindness she shared so generously. She spent a lot of her time volunteering for the Ruritans Club and the VFW Post 8163, both in Clarksville and she and Dennis enjoyed their yearly trip with friends to the Outer Banks.

May was predeceased by her husband, Dennis in January of 2025, her parents Floyd and Lydia Belair and her youngest sister, Gertrude Spooner. She is survived by her daughter, Tina (Don), Cary, NC, son Frank (Carol) Virginia Beach, VA and son Joseph, Buffalo, NY. Her grandchildren, Christopher (Virginia Beach, VA), Austin (Clarksville, VA), Katherine (Buffalo, NY) and Spencer (Raleigh, NC), two great-granddaughters (Buffalo, NY), and her sister Dora Stahl (Scottsburg, VA). She has many nieces and nephews and was a second mom and a second grandma as well to some special people.

At the request of May, there will be no memorial or funeral services. In remembrance of her and to honor her, please consider a donation in her memory to Lake Country SPCA, Clarksville, VA or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
