Nellie Cole Barksdale

Nellie "Nell" Cole Barksdale, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 14th, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on Wednesday, April 29th, 1936 to the late Richard W. Cole and the late Hallie Weatherford Cole, Nell lived a life full of love, dedication, and care for her family.

Nell's devotion to her family was unparalleled. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Sue Johnson (Anthony Shook) and Mary Jo Johnson; her grandchildren, Reggie Matthews (Blair), Mickey Anderson Jr., Michaela Vargas (Abe), Christy Frederick (Nick), Jared Peterson (Lindsey), Charles Peterson (Meric), and Glen Peterson; along with her numerous great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy; and her brother, Lloyd Cole.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Reggie Shotwell; her grandson, Daniel Anderson; and her brothers, R.C. Cole and Charlie Cole.

Professionally, Nell dedicated many years of her life working at Boston Commons, where she was known for her commitment and strong work ethic. Outside of work, Nellie had a passion for sewing, a skill she honed with love and precision. Creating beautiful pieces was her art, which she often shared with those she held dear. The essence of Nell's life was her family, whom she loved deeply. She was a woman of grace and strength, always there for her loved ones with an open heart. Her nurturing spirit and deeply rooted values continue to inspire all those who knew her. She also was a loyal member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church and her faith was very important to her.
