Patricia Anne (née Gibbs) Hobgood, 88, of Buffalo Junction, Virginia passed away on January 17, 2026. Patricia was born on June 26, 1937 to Margaret Virginia (née Lohr) and James Michael Gibbs of Pratts, Virginia.
Patricia attended Madison County Highschool, graduating class of 1955. She then earned an Associate’s degree from Averett College. Patricia then continued her studies at Carson Newman College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology, minoring in Chemistry. While at Carson Newman, she was a member of the Greek Hypess Epsilon Alpha honor society. To conclude her educational training, she completed the Medical Technology Program at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1959. After her formal training, Patricia worked as a medical laboratory technician.
Patricia was the spiritual and religious center of her family. Patricia was a quiet force of generosity, compassion, and lighthearted humor, always working behind the scenes to ensure that others were supported. Whether teaching Sunday School at Buffalo Baptist Church or making cookies for a grandchild’s school event, her kindness touched everyone. Patricia found joy in attending garden club meetings, crafting alongside other rug hookers, baking elaborate birthday cakes for her grandchildren, reading books, attending family celebrations, and tending to her menagerie of plants and pets. Patricia was an active member of the Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief team, she volunteered at Camp Little Crossroads and Camp Concord, she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union, and an active member of the Montpelier Chapter of the DAR. Patricia thrived in environments where she could help others actualize their full potential. Her life was defined by faith, service, community, steadfastness, and a desire to see that everyone was made to feel at home.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Richard Hobgood; daughters, Angela (Mark) Eckler and Emily (Bill) Walker; grandchildren, Thomas (Shayna) Fitzgerald IV, Lydia (Doug) Taylor, Kathryn (Austin) Shenk, Benjamin (Sterling) Fitzgerald, Noah (Corrine) Fitzgerald, Grace-Marie Eckler, Ruth (Daniel) Toole, Jacob Fitzgerald, Candace (Carson) Lucado; great-grandchildren, Delilah Fitzgerald, Kinsley Fitzgerald, Thomas Fitzgerald V, Nicholas Fitzgerald, Theodore Fitzgerald; sister, Sharon (Earl) Koehn; sister in law, Helen Rose (Don) Vann.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Patricia's memory on Friday, January 23rd, at Buffalo Baptist Church beginning at 11:00 am. The family will be receiving friends afterwards in the fellowship hall, they would like to invite you to join them for lunch and a time for sharing fond memories.
