Penny Lou Powell-Woody of Sutherlin passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the age of 63. She was born on Thursday, September 20, 1962, in Mebane, North Carolina to the late Walter Hubert Powell and Doris Fuqua Powell. She was married to James Woody, who survives.
Penny was a cherished and devoted mother who found immense joy in her children and every stage of their lives. Raised on her parents' farm in Sutherlin, she learned early the values of hard work, compassion, and caring for both people and animals from them. Horses held a special place in Penny's heart throughout her life, and some of her happiest moments were spent outdoors surrounded by nature. Her love and dedication to her family were evident in everything she did, earning her a treasured place in the hearts of all who knew her.
Professionally, Penny dedicated many years to her role as an Ophthalmologist Technician, where her compassion and calming spirit touched the lives of countless patients. Later in life, she also enjoyed educating others on preventing the spread of gypsy moths, taking pride in serving her community in meaningful ways.
An enthusiast of canoeing, gardening, kayaking, and caring for her many potted plants, Penny often found tranquility on the water and in the beauty of the outdoors. She was also active in Camp Selah Ministries, where her kindness and servant's heart impacted generations of young people. Penny's love for the beach was unparalleled, and she often found peace and solace in the sound of the waves during her many trips to the coast. Above all else, her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was being "Moma" and later "MaPenny" to her beloved grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, James; her children, B.J. Reaves (Samantha), Zachary Reaves (Alison), Anastasia Szymkowski (Michael) and Michaela Moore; her grandchildren, Willow & Max Reaves, Mary Lou & Polly Reaves, Eleanor Stilwell, Marley Powell and Walter & Connor Fincher; her siblings, Grey Arrington (Reggie) and Karen Davis (Terry); brother-in-law, Charles Woody; sister-in-law, Angela Woody Crews (Steve); nieces & nephews, Charles Thompson (Caitlin), Karlie Wilson, Kyle Wilson, Makayla Woody and Meredith Woody.
