Prentice Vernell Gupton, 89, husband of Emmy Burton Gupton, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Seasons at The Woodview in South Boston with his wife by his side.Mr. Gupton was born July 16, 1925 in Aarons Creek to the late Eugene Graham, Sr. and Nora Victoria Royster Gupton.A graduate of Virgilina High School with the Class of 1942, Prentice served his country in the United States Army infantry during World War II.He established Gupton Sheet Metal in 1951 and remained there until his retirement in 1983.An avid golfer, Prentice was a member of Halifax Country Club where he was a former Club Champion, setting a course record with a 64 in 1973 and of Kinderton Country Club.A member of Clarksville Baptist Church, he was a former long time member of First Baptist Church in South Boston.In addition to his wife, Mr. Gupton is survived by his daughters, Gail Owen and her husband, Dr. Bill Owen of Buffalo Junction, and Celia Crews and her husband, David Crews of Mocksville, NC, and son, Gary Gupton and his wife, Linda Gupton of South Boston, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five step-children.His sisters, Virginia Wilson of Virgilina and Gladys Thompson of Richmond also survive. Mr. Gupton was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Overbey and Helen Bomar and his brothers, Eugene, Doug, Edward, and Bobby Gupton.Memorial services will be held at 3PM on Wednesday, August 13th at Clarksville Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Greg Randall officiating.Interment will follow in the Aarons Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.The family will receive friends prior to the service on Wednesday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home.Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.wclfh.com.
