Richard Comer

January 12, 1953 — February 1, 2026

Halifax

Richard “Ricky” Dwight Comer Sr. passed away on February 1, 2026 at his home in Halifax, Virginia. He was an avid outdoorsman and farmer. He spent most of his time fixing something around the farm or on a tractor. Ricky dedicated many years of his life working on the railroad for Norfolk Southern. He had a love for bluegrass and refused to listen to anything else. He was known by many nicknames including “Mosshead” and “Widowmaker.” Ricky would do anything for anyone and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. To know him was to love him.

Ricky enjoyed being around his family and friends and always had a good story to tell. He is known best for his hard work and determination. His memory will live on in the fields he farmed, the music he loved, and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his friends, family, and those who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathy Comer; daughter Amy Comer (Andy); son Dwight Comer (Megan); sisters, Joyce Lowery & Brenda Macy (James); his grandchildren, Bethany Comer (Grayson), Bridget Comer, Isaac Comer, Slade Comer, Skylar Barksdale, Kaylin Barksdale, and soon to be great grandson, Mason Jones.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel and father, Andrew “Buck”; his brothers, David and Wallace and a brother-in-law Roy Lowery.

Even when Ricky became sick with cancer he never gave up hope.2 Timothy 4:7-8 reads: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
