William "Billy" Orville Hanks Jr.

William Orville “Billy” Hanks Jr., aka Hootie, 70, went home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2026.

Born on January 23, 1956, Bill was one of seven children born to the late William Orville Hanks Sr. and Phyllis Hanks. Throughout his life, he was known for his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and the gift of making people laugh. Whether he was telling one of his many stories or sharing a joke, Bill had a way of bringing joy to those around him. His laughter, kindness, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Gail, who remained a cherished part of his life and memory.

He is survived by his loving mother, Phyllis Hanks; his devoted life partner, Tammy Wright; and his stepchildren, Tamara Irby, Jamie Wright, and Jacob Wright. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren: Caleb, Tyler, Brantley, Ava, Carson, Porter, Deacon, Mila, Brody, and Rory each of whom brought him tremendous joy.

He is also survived by his siblings: Donna Werner of Blackstone, Virginia; Jerry Armentrout of Clover, Virginia; Harriett Dech of Victoria, Virginia; Tim Hanks of Blackstone, Virginia; Pam Wortham of Kenbridge, Virginia; and Karen Gittman of Kenbridge, Virginia. He also leaves behind three nieces, three nephews, extended family, and many dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Bill was a proud member of the Shriners, an organization whose mission of helping children was close to his heart. Although he faced many health challenges throughout his life, he met them with remarkable strength and resilience. Those who loved him find comfort in knowing that he is now free from pain and at peace in the presence of his Savior.

He was self employed and had a janitorial service that is still going strong today. Bill also worked at his own grocery store and other food establishments. He was also an avid fan of UVA and the New York Jets.

Bill’s greatest legacy is not found in the years he lived, but in the countless smiles he brought to others. His stories, laughter, and unmistakable sense of humor created memories that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends for generations to come.

While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, we rejoice in the promise that we will see him again. Until that day, we will remember him every time we share a laugh, tell a good story, or gather with those we love.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 30th, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Clinton McKinney officiating and Masonic Rites to follow. The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Children’s, Lake Country Shrine Club, P.O. Box 72, South Boston, VA 24592, in honor of Bill’s lifelong support of their mission to provide compassionate care to children in need.
