Clarksville, VA - William Eugene Harris, 87, of Clarksville, VA went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 3, 2017.William was born on October 22, 1929 to the late Willie Bennie and Emma Steed Harris in Vance County, North Carolina.He is survived by his loving wife Marlene Yancey Harris of 65 ½ years. William was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Lead Usher, Baptismal Committee Chairperson, Adult II Men Sunday School President and was a member of the Cemetery Committee.He retired from Burlington Industries after 51 years of employment.William was a lifetime member of the Mecklenburg County Rescue Squad and enjoyed not only answering calls but also participating in annual fundraisers.He was also a lifetime member of Clarksville Ruritan Club.He was a tobacco and hog farmer who loved to grow vegetables and share them with his neighbors.William loved his family dearly and would do anything for them.His passions were farming and helping others. In addition to his wife.Survivors include: one sister, Ann H. Cobb (Stanley) of Raleigh, NC; and two daughters, Sandra Powell (David), of Durham, NC and Karen Walker (Samuel), of Buffalo Junction, VA; grandchildren, Joseph Powell (Britany), Matthew Powell (Grace), Harrison Walker, and Jordan Walker; great-grandchildren Lilly and Sydney Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by siblings, Edward A. Harris, Bobby W. Harris, Virginia H. Clark and Rebecca H. Paschall. His favorite companion was his border collie, Drover.He was blessed to have two faithful caretakers, Senna Dora Brayboy and Penny Oxendine. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6 at 2:00 pm at Union Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Jackie Wray officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery and there will be open fellowship following completion of all services in the Union Chapel Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 5 from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Mecklenburg Co. Life Saving & Rescue Squad, PO Box 1539, Clarksville, VA 23927 or to Union Chapel Baptist Church, 4433 Shiney Rock Rd., Clarksville, VA 23927.
